PRODUCTION UPDATE: PERSONALITY TRAITS

It’s been a while since we looked at our beloved, complex, ever-evolving Seedlings. So today, let’s look at their personalities, specifically what we call their Personality Traits. An important part in what makes anyone individual. This effort was led by the Team Tailo. In a nutshell: personality transpires through behaviour: this is marked by Exclusive Thoughts, Exclusive Activities and Activity Scoring. This means a Seedling with a certain personality trait, will have a specific, exaggerated response to a specific kind of event that a Seedling without this personality trait wouldn't have. For example, a tidy, conscientious Seedling might find themselves cleaning up after others often. They will be more likely to pick Yoga (beneficial activity) over reading poetry (luxurious activity). This is of course up for debate, but right now we need to add some activities to play around with.

What do Personality Traits influence in the game? Well, we imagine it affecting a Seedling’s growth: depending on their personality, a Seedling will pick different leisure activities, training or even neglecting some skills altogether. They’ll also play a role in relationships: traits that compliment each other will lead to better relationships. A conscientious Seedling is less likely to swear: therefore have better social interactions in general. A tidy Seedling is more likely to be put off by a bad smell. In short, this feature deepens the complexity and nuance of the simulation considerably.

But of course that leads to its own challenges! It’s incredibly difficult to map psychologies and the human personality and reduce it down to a set number of traits (even if we plan to expand the list of traits). This is further complicated when we consider how to implement our AI scoring so that the systems balance with each other. We know that there’ll be a bit of messy spillages but it’s an incredibly exciting moment to see how these interconnected systems work together.
