Hi hi hi,
Here we go again with the second installment of WIP Thursday. Every other Thursday I'll post a little snippet of concept art or other work in progress for you to enjoy and scrutinize.
Keep in mind everything you see is WIP, nothing is set in stone, development is on-going, blah blah, you know the drill.
Let's start with solving last WIPT's teaser-quiz - [LH]FNC7 guessed "a congregation of Seedlings adoring the mighty and holy fire" was behind our mystery image. It would certainly be in character for them...
But let's unveil the mystery:
These are rough thumbnails, exploring which other biomes might be used in PIONEERS. Currently the world of Avesta is mostly covered in grass and trees - which is nice, but our art team wanted to make the areas where survival is a bit more challenging visually different and more interesting.
Joe quickly painted over existing screenshots, to try out different colors and moods for the new biome. He also played with different textures - he says he mainly just tried to find what looked cool and what didn't, what felt right.
Above I've shared some rough sketches that show what different biomes could look like from a player's perspective. The third one from the top is the desert biome. Joe says: "We always try to have some elements from the game in the concepts for comparison, so nothing looks TOTALLY new and weird. Sometimes just a seedling is enough but usually the trees and grass are good reference when we do terrain stuff."
This is why they often paint directly over screenshots, or use them for reference.
Below you see some explorations of different assets in the desert biome, based on the work above. Dead trees, weird flat rocks, patchy ground... Seedling for scale.
Personally, I can't wait to see this translated to actual-in-game-content. It will really bring the world to life a bit more - and not just visually. Seeing this with different resources, vegetation and some Seedling activity... it's gonna be pretty damn sweet.
Oh! What's that? Hopefully it will have loaded fully in time for the next WIP Thursday...
In the meantime, take a shot at guessing what we're looking at - submit your best and worst guesses in the comments or on Discord. All will be revealed in two weeks time, on the next WIP Thursday.
