Welcome to the latest episode of WIPT, the blog series where I go through our artists' concept art folders, pick whatever tickles my curiosity and then annoy said artists with questions about what I found. This time Hossein was my victim again.
As always, anything you see here is subject to change. Let's go! We start with unveiling last WIPT's mystery image. Last time we got a lot of good guesses - they ranged from [FDS] Staticsprite's worry about evil stone monsters waiting on Avesta, to [ AF ] Cashmere Captain being hyped about space motorcycles. I think someone even thought they might be fish? And then came [II] Mr Binary:
"I think the next image might be workbenches for crafting certain types items"
Ding ding ding! Turns out, it's designs for our Engineering table - a workstation where early in the game Seedlings can produce simple parts for machines and constructions, or weapons. Later specialized engineers will be able to build factories that will do such tasks automatically and in great numbers, but you gotta start small when landing on a brand new planet.
To go from these sketches from Joe to a 3D model, Hossein faced a few challenges. The table needed to visually communicate its function to the player very clearly, and all those tell tale signs needed to fit into a rather tiny space. A balance between adding the necessary parts that players would recognize, and keeping it simple and minimal needed to be struck, while also remaining faithful to the concept art. Phew.
In the finished 3D model below you'll notice that streamlined elements from all sketches have found their place. We're ready to produce some ...stuff!
Here's another journey from doodle to model, the Chemical Mixer (it mixes chemicals). You can kind of see an evolution from kitchen appliance to science fiction gadget, if you ask me.
And the finished model:
As you can see, our process is very collaborative, with no one person making the decision how something needs to look from the moment it was conceptualized. There is a lot of playing around until you get it right, while of course being mindful of the over all aesthetics, functionality and technical limitations. There's back and forth, until we have something that works on all fronts. The next installment of WIP Thursday is gonna be a bigger one, and before it's out I will share a few more new screenshots on Discord, to tide you over. See you there! Oh, und one last thing: I could not unsee him, so you gotta see him too. You're welcome.
What would you name him? Let me know in the comments or on Discord. The winner will be named in the next installment of WIPT, where we will have a closer look at a very central object. (Uuuh what could it be?)
